Venerdì 19 novembre 2021 dalle 18 alle 21.30 co_atto presenta 18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window mostra personale di Cecilia Mentasti, a cura di co_atto e coordinata da Vincenzo Argentieri.
Il progetto, pensato appositamente per lo spazio di co_atto, nasce dalla fascinazione per una storia di famiglia dell’artista. Il racconto, inverificato e inverificabile, narra di un dipinto veneziano, forse di inestimabile valore, tagliato dai trisnonni materni per poter essere appeso nell’angolo di un corridoio particolarmente stretto. Su queste note, 18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window si articola in una serie di performance in cui Cecilia Mentasti interviene su opere altrui, troppo grandi per entrare in vetrina. Tagliare un’opera potrebbe sembrare un atto barbarico, ma di opere tagliate, rifilate, scomposte è piena la storia dell’arte.
Con questa personale Cecilia Mentasti riflette sull’identità spaziale puntiforme, paratattica e problematica del project space milanese, così lontano dall’idea di white cube. Il suo agire all’interno di uno spazio pubblico mette in luce la possibilità per i visitatori e le visitatrici di contemplare un rapporto inedito nei confronti dell’opera d’arte, in quanto attraverso l’atto del taglio a fini “espositivi” si configura una forma di cura conflittuale.
Alle artiste e agli artisti invitati, viene chiesta un’opera che non possa entrare nello spazio espositivo e che debba subire un intervento da parte di Cecilia Mentasti per poter essere esposta. Si instaura, dunque, un cortocircuito tra la scelta di affidarsi a lei e l’accettazione consapevole di una possibile azione invasiva. Ognuno di questi interventi va a comporre la performance che dà il titolo alla mostra e che è da intendere come un’unica opera in cui l’identità artistica sfuma in un rapporto a due.
18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window è un progetto di Cecilia Mentasti a cura di co_atto e coordinato da Vincenzo Argentieri. Inaugura venerdì 19 novembre dalle 18 alle 21.30 e si conclude l’11 dicembre 2021. È visibile tutti i giorni negli orari di apertura della stazione e visitabile insieme al team di co_atto su appuntamento scrivendo a coatto.info@gmail.com.
In occasione dell’inaugurazione sono presentati due numeri di red_atto: il quarto, dedicato alla precedente mostra co_atto un_fair “Ricominciare dal Silenzio” e il quinto che racconta la personale di Cecilia Mentasti tramite un multiplo d’artista, testi, illustrazioni e la documentazione fotografica di Carlos Manuel Gasparotto.
Cecilia Mentasti (Varese, 1993) è un’artista visiva e art-worker. La sua ricerca è incentrata sugli elementi marginalizzati all’interno del sistema dell’arte e, nello specifico, sulla relazione tra regole e cura. Ha partecipato a diverse mostre e residenze e dal 2019 è co-fondatrice dell’artist-run-space BRACE BRACE. Le ultime mostre sono la personale have you ever been / where you already are?//. a BRACE BRACE e Safari (not the exception but the rule) per Video Sound Art 2021 presso il Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano.
co_atto è il project space fondato da Stefano Bertolini, Ludovico Da Prato e Marta Orsola Sironi, che si articola in 18 vetrine presso la stazione del Passante Ferroviario di Milano Porta Garibaldi. co_atto è parte di Underpass, progetto di riqualificazione degli spazi all’interno delle stazioni del Passante Ferroviario di Milano, dedicati alla promozione di artistз emergentз. Underpass è inserito all’interno del Progetto DisseMina, promosso da Le Belle Arti APS – Progetto Artepassante, con il sostegno di Fondazione Cariplo – bando “Luoghi di innovazione culturale – 2019.

Friday, November 19, 2021, from 6 to 9.30 pm, co_atto presents 18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window solo exhibition by Cecilia Mentasti, curated by co_atto and coordinated by Vincenzo Argentieri.
The project, conceived specifically for the space of co_atto, comes from the fascination for a family story of the artist. The story, unverified and unverifiable, tells of a Venetian painting, perhaps of inestimable value, cut by the maternal great-great-grandparents to be hung in the corner of a particularly narrow corridor. On these notes, 18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window is articulated in a series of performances. During these, Cecilia Mentasti intervenes on other people’s works, too big to fit in the window. Cutting a work of art might seem a barbaric act, but the history of art is full of cut, trimmed and decomposed works.
With this solo show Cecilia Mentasti reflects on the punctiform, paratactic and problematic spatial identity of the Milanese project space, so far from the idea of the white cube. Her action within a public space highlights the possibility for visitors to contemplate an unprecedented relationship with the work of art, as through the act of cutting for “exhibition” purposes a form of conflictual care is configured.
The invited artists are asked for a work that cannot fit into the exhibition space, and that must undergo an intervention by Cecilia Mentasti to be exhibited. Therefore, a short circuit is established between the choice of relying on her and the conscious acceptance of a possible invasive action. Each of these interventions composes the performance that gives the title to the exhibition and is intended as a unique work in which the artistic identity fades into a relationship between two people.
18 artworks that couldn’t fit in a window is a project by Cecilia Mentasti, curated by co_atto and coordinated by Vincenzo Argentieri. It opens on Friday, November 19 from 6 pm to 9.30 pm and ends on the 11th of December 2021. It can be seen every day during the opening hours of the station and can be visited together with the co_atto team by appointment by writing to coatto.info@gmail.com.
On the occasion of the opening, two issues of red_atto will be presented. The fourth one is dedicated to the previous co_atto un_fair exhibition “Ricominciare dal Silenzio”. Although the fifth one tells about Cecilia Mentasti’s solo exhibition through an artist’s multiple, texts, illustrations and Carlos Manuel Gasparotto’s photographic documentation.
Cecilia Mentasti (Varese, 1993) is a visual artist and art-worker.
